The Oscar-nominated actor will join Sony’s Marvel universe as the comic-book villain in a new film to be directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer.

Sony Pictures announced on Twitter Friday that the actor who played the mumbling menace Bane in The Dark Knight Rises will portray Spider-Man adversary Eddie Brock, a freelance photographer who becomes infected by an alien lifeform that needs a host in order to survive.

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is in talks to helm the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Spider-Man spinoff will kick off a series of Sony films based on characters the Spider-Man universe. The studio is reportedly also developing a Silver Sable and Black Cat project.

With both the star and director attached, the project looks to be in good position to move forward and lead Sony’s separate superhero cinematic universe. The project is one of Sony’s top priorities and the studio is not wasting time as the movie is set to open Oct. 5, 2018.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce Venom alongside Amy Pascal, with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner penning the script. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps at this time, but we do know that this will feature the Eddie Brock version of the character rather than the Flash Thompson or Mac Gargan version.

Venom was first created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck in 1988, and quickly became one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Comics universe. Venom is an alien symbiote, a parasitic lifeform that latches on to a human host in order to survive, imbuing its meat condo with an array of superhuman powers that rival Spider-Man’s.

Tom Hardy, who has been a huge fan of Venom, was the meat and potatoes of Mad Max: Fury Road. The rugged actor was Oscar nominated for his supporting role in The Revenant and next stars in the Christopher Nolan-directed Dunkirk (which is already getting buzzed about for Oscar).
