La La Land Picking up 14 Oscar Nods to Tie the Record Set by Titanic

La La Land is looking to continue its winning streak, picking up a record-tying 14 nominations for this year’s Academy Awards.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning and as expected, "La La Land" danced away with a bunch, picking up 14 nods to tie the record set by “Titanic” and “All About Eve.” The honey-coated celebration of all things Hollywood was nominated for best picture and best director for 32-year old wunderkind Damien Chazelle. Both of its lead actors, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, were recognized for their work as big city dreamers in love. The number of nominations, which includes two in the same Best Original Song category, makes the Damian Chazelle-directed film the most Oscar-nominated musical in history, beating Mary Poppins' 13 nominations.

The other nominees for best picture are: "Moonlight," ''Arrival," ''Manchester By The Sea," ''Hell or High Water," ''Lion," ''Fences," 'Hidden Figures" and "Hacksaw Ridge."

For Best Director, La La Land’s Damien Chazelle faces competition from Mel Gibson, (Hacksaw Ridge) Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester By The Sea).

For Best Actor, it’s Ryan Gosling (La La Land) versus the following: Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences). La La Land’s Emma Stone made a showing in the Best Actress category, and is pitted against Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).

Following two years of "OscarsSoWhite" furor, the Academy of Motion Pictures fielded a notably more diverse field of nominees, led by Barry Jenkins' luminous coming-of-age portrait "Moonlight," Denzel Washington's "Fences" and Theodore Melfi's "Hidden Figures."

For the first time in history, the nominations were not announced at a press conference attended by members of the entertainment media. Instead, Academy officials are bypassing the opportunity for journalists' questions and revealing the nominees in a global web broadcast on the Oscars website.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 26 February, 2017.
