15 of the Most Anticipated Sci-fi Movies of 2016

2015 is not really big for sci-fi film junkies, so let’s look ahead at what movies are coming in 2016. Of course, we haven’t seen these movies yet, but for one reason or another, they are our most anticipated movies of 2016. These movies offer up the most potential for box office success next year.

From alien invasions to space battles to post apocalyptic adventures to everything else in the realm of endless possibilities, there are plenty of potentially great (and probably some might not be so satisfying) sci-fi movies on the horizon.

 

1.         The 5th Wave

Release Date: January 15, 2016

Starring: Chloe Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Maika Monroe

Chloe Grace Moretz stars as a girl on the run following four waves of increasingly deadly alien attacks which have left most of Earth decimated. With a fifth wave looming, she desperately tries to save her younger brother. The film is directed by J Blakeson.

 

2.         Deadpool

Release Date: February 12, 2016

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano

A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and adopts the alter ego Deadpool.

 

3.         Viral

Release Date: February 19, 2016

Starring: Analeigh Tipton, Michael Kelly, Brianne Howey

Viral follows the outbreak of a virus that wipes out the majority of the human population, a young woman documents her family's new life in quarantine and tries to protect her infected sister.

 

4.         The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Release Date: March 18, 2016

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz

The movie follows Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton in their venture into the world outside of the fence as they are taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare.

 

5.         Independence Day: Resurgence

Release Date: June 24, 2016

Starring: Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Joey King

We always knew that they would come back! Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women will be able to save our world from the brink of extinction by a new alien invasion. Expect big explosions, great sound design and cool special effects that are best taken in on the big screen.

 

6.         Star Trek Beyond

Release Date: July 8, 2016

Starring: Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto

Although J.J. Abrams has moved onto another galaxy far far away, we’re still expecting Star Trek Beyond to be just as enjoyable as usual. There aren’t any Star Trek Beyond plot details available yet, but we have no doubt it’ll be another great iteration of the franchise. The film has potential to light it up at the box office in summer 2016.

 

7.         Ghostbusters

Release Date: July 15, 2016

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Chris Hemsworth, Kate McKinnon

Ghostbusters comes back, but this time the team is led by females. The movie will allegedly follow Wiig and McCarthy’s characters who are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. After Wiig is laughed out of her Columbia University teaching job, she reunites with McCarthy and two other proton packers to wrangle up some phantoms. Ghosts will apparently invade Manhattan, forcing the new Ghostbusters to save the day.

 

8.         Replicas

Release Date: September 7, 2016

Starring: Keanu Reeves

Replicas is just one of Keanu’s seven upcoming projects, and it looks to have a lot of promise. The movie will follow a scientist who becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a tragic traffic accident. The film is being directed by Tanya Wexler with a story written by Stephen Hamel.

 

9.         Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: December 16, 2016

Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker

The first anthology movie will follow rebels who set out to steal the plans for the Death Star. It’s set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and New Hope. Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) will definitely not make Star Wars fans dissatisfied.

 

10.       Assassin's Creed

Release Date: December 21, 2016

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams

To sum it up, Assassin’s Creed has all of the right ingredients for box office gold. Cast? We have Michael Fassbender stars as Callum Lynch. Plot?  The movie will follow Lynch as he explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar as he becomes a Master Assassin. Interesting enough? What else can you ask for?

 

11.       Cell

Release Date: TBA 2016

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack, Isabelle Fuhrman

When a mysterious cell phone signal causes apocalyptic chaos, an artist is determined to reunite with his young son in New England and he manages to fend off the creatures with a group of survivors.

 

12.       Passengers

Release Date: December 21, 2016

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt

It stars two of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.  Every director wants them in a movie and every movie fan wants to watch them on the screen. And with a sci-fi backdrop, it’s obviously a must see one. The film will follow a spacecraft travelling to a distant colony planet with thousand of people aboard in sleep chambers. When a malfunction causes a single passenger to awaken 60 years early, he is faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, unless he (Pratt) wakes up a second passenger (Lawrence).

 

13.       The Circle

Release Date: TBA 2016

Starring: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Karen Gillan, John Boyega

The movie will revolve around a woman who lands a job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in a new age of civility and transparency.

 

14.       Story of Your Life

Release Date: TBA 2016

Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker

Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.

 

15.       The Space Between Us

Release Date: TBA 2016

Starring: Carla Gugino, Britt Robertson, Asa Butterfield

Originally titled Out of This World, The Space Between Us will follow the story of a young man raised by scientists on Mars returns to Earth to find his father.
